Louis
was born and brought up in Pietermaritzburg and after completing
his matric in 1959, trained as a Carpenter and Joiner. In
1964 he then trained at a Bible College in Cape Town with
the intention of doing missionary work. After one year of
training Louis joined the S.A. Baptist Missionary Society
and was stationed at the Jubilee Mission Hospital in Hammanskraal
north of Pretoria in 1965.
Due to changes in Government in South Africa, Louis and
his wife Grace left Jubilee Mission Hospital, and in 1968
Louis commenced his career in the teaching profession in
Pietermaritzburg. He gained his National Technical Diploma
and National Teachers Diploma while lecturing in Pietermaritzburg.
He also taught at the Treverton Schools in Mooi River before
taking up a position at a Technical College in Mafikeng.
He was eventually appointed as an Advisor in Technical Education
and was seconded to the KwaZulu-Natal Government Education
Department. He left the Department of Education in October
1994 to assist the Africa Co-operative Action Trust (ACAT),
a rural development agency, to develop a new curriculum
for Adult Basic Education and Training. He was assisted
by Grace and an editing team to develop training manuals
specifically for the upliftment and training of disadvantaged
rural people of South Africa.
Louis came to faith in Christ in 1959 at a youth camp which
was held at the Union Bible Institute, Sweetwaters near
Pietermaritzburg and was baptized as a believer at the Central
Baptist Church. He met his wife Grace at Bible College and
they were married in 1966 in the Scottsville Baptist Church.
They both served the Lord together at the Mission Hospital
and were involved in various types of ministry in evangelical
churches as they moved around in South Africa. They were
blessed with a family of two boys and two girls, and now
have five grandsons. They joined the Howick Community Church
in 1994 where they have since been involved in lay ministry
with God’s people.
Louis was appointed in February 2008 as Pastoral Assistant
at Howick Community Church to head up the Care Ministry
after he retired from his work with ACAT.
